How to play Liar's Dice

  1. 1Everyone rolls five dice in secret. You can only see your own.
  2. 2On your turn, bid how many dice of one face you think are on the whole table, like “four 5s”. Ones are wild and count as any face.
  3. 3The next player must raise the bid, with a higher number of dice or the same number of a higher face, or call liar.
  4. 4When someone calls liar, all the dice are revealed. If there are at least as many as the bid, the caller loses a die. If not, the bidder does.
  5. 5The loser starts the next round. Lose all your dice and you're out, and the last player with dice wins.

Bluff big, or call the liar

Everyone rolls five dice in secret and bids on how many of a face are on the whole table. Ones are wild. Raise the bid or call liar, and whoever is wrong loses a die.

Variations

  • Real dice: give each player five dice and a cup, and play exactly the same way around the table.

Tips

  • Each hidden die has a one-in-three chance of matching, counting wild ones. Use that to judge whether a bid is believable.
