How to play Chess
- 1White moves first, then players take turns. Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap a square to move it.
- 2Rooks move in straight lines, bishops diagonally, and queens both ways. Knights jump in an L, and kings move one square in any direction.
- 3Pawns move forward one square, or two on their first move, and capture diagonally. A pawn that reaches the far side promotes to another piece.
- 4Land on an enemy piece to capture it. If your king is attacked, that's check, and your next move must get it out of danger.
- 5Checkmate is check with no way out, and it wins the game. A player with no legal move who isn't in check is stalemated, and the game is a draw.
Checkmate the king to win
Play the computer as white, or share this screen with a friend. All the rules are in: castling, en passant, promotion and every kind of draw.
Variations
- Speed chess: give each player a five-minute timer on a phone, and running out of time loses.
Tips
- Control the centre early, bring out your knights and bishops, and castle to get your king to safety.
